Why? Because it will:

  • Mean NO supermarket for 2-3 years ripping the heart out of the community
  • Completely overshadow St Paul’s Primary School, affecting the health and education of OUR children
  • Create MORE parking issues
  • CUT OUT natural direct sunlight from a huge part of central Brentford
  • Seriously BLIGHT and IMPACT the St Paul’s conservation area

As part of the public consultation exercise, local residents produced and paid for 3000 leaflets to go into local letterboxes and shops in response to the Essential Living proposed plans for the Morrisons site.  It was entitled STOP THIS HAPPENING NOW and provided a few vital facts omitted from the publicity produced by the developers and called upon local people to make their objections heard.  It also asked residents to write in to the council by Feb 17th with suggested text for letter of objection .

On many grounds, this application is completely inappropriate for our town centre – 10 storeys high; overshadowing St.Paul’s Primary School and surrounding conservation area; 225 private rental flats – and no supermarket for up to 3 years.

In addition, a petition against the proposed Essential Living development of the Morrisons site, was set up in both paper and online form.  It called on Hounslow Council to refuse the planning application on the grounds that is it is over-bearing, out-of-scale and out of character with the surrounding vicinity

In two weeks, the petition secured just under 3,100 names.  As a result of our presence at Morrisons, with our petition stall, we learned that up to 23,000 people use Morrisons every week- and the shock and disbelief when shoppers learned that there was to be no supermarket for up to 3 years while the development takes place was palpable.

As a result of our efforts, we have been told that the application which was due to go before the planning committee on March 9th has now been put off until April or May. There will be an Essential Living presentation at the Brentford Community Council Meeting on March 13th.

Planning Application: Morrison Site, Brentford High Street.

The BCC met this week and I can now send you the views they adopted.

I would be grateful if you can incorporate them in your report and let us know when we can see a copy.

1.0. Previous Consultations.

1.01. The Brentford Community Council received presentations from both Essential Living and London Green to consider their preliminary ideas

last summer and we sent you agreed minutes of those meetings.

1.02. We can now respond to the submitted scheme for the Morrison site.

1.03 We note that the application does not include a contextual plan for the two sites.

1.04. In our view the two sites must be considered together and no decision on either site should be taken in isolation. We have been advised by London Green that they intend to submit an application shortly

1.05. The Morrison site raises a large number of issues in its own right and our views on these are set out below.

3000 Signed Our Petition!

The vast majority of people using Morrisons who were invited to sign did so, with many saying not only did they not know there was a proposal to redevelop the site, but were shocked to hear that they would be without a supermarket frup to 3 years while the development took place. Figures suggest over 23,000 visits are made to Morrisons each week with many also visiting the high street.

Friends of St Paul’s Recreation Speaks Out

Criticises proposed neighbouring developments on Morrisons and Police sites

A packed public meeting at St Paul’s Church on Friday 27th January heard about a proposed development at Morrisons store on Brentford High Street and also plans for the Watermans, Max Factor and police station sites. 

Martin Case, head of Friends of St Paul’s Recreation spoke out. Here’s his speech in full:

The proposed plans for the Morrisons site if current proposal is granted will rip the heart out of the Brentford community for a period of at least two years and cause significant deterioration to the quality of life in the town for both residents and business.

Where are local people to shop while this site is being developed? What contingency planning has been agreed to support the missing supermarket while building occurs?

Does the council advocate the use of cars making short journeys to Tesco’s in Osterley thereby adding to the already poor air quality of Brentford let alone the additional traffic problems this will generate? Continue reading Friends of St Paul’s Recreation Speaks Out

Selling Public Land is Making The Housing Crisis Worse

  • Only 20% of new homes to be built on recently sold public land will be classified as ‘affordable’, according to fresh research

  • At the current rate, the government’s new homes target on sold-off public land will not be met until 2032, 12 years later than promised

  • The public land sell-off should be halted in next week’s Budget. This would free up land for communities themselves to help deliver high-quality, affordable homes

Fresh analysis of recently published government statistics reveal that only one in five of the new homes to be built on public land sold off in the last six months will be classified as ‘affordable’. Even this figure is optimistic as it uses the government’s own widely criticised definition of affordability. As little as 7% of new homes are likely to be social housing, and in some cases developments comprise solely of luxury properties.
